Natural Resources

The League of Women Voters of the United States believes that natural resources should be managed as interrelated parts of life-supporting ecosystems. Resources should be conserved and protected to assure their future availability. Pollution of these resources should be controlled in order to preserve the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of ecosystems and to protect public health.

FEDERAL AGRICULTURE POLICIES

The League of Women Voters supports sustainable and environmentally sound agriculture, free-market pricing, financial support for farmers, and transparent regulation of farming’s environmental and health impacts. Key priorities include promoting research, enforcing antitrust laws, ensuring food safety, and improving consumer education on labeling.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

The League of Women Voters emphasizes the importance of public understanding, transparency, and participation in natural resource management and environmental decision-making. It advocates for accessible information, inclusive hearings, public education, and guaranteed mechanisms for citizen appeal to ensure informed and equitable outcomes at all levels of government.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND POLLUTION

The League of Women Voters advocates for robust environmental protection policies that preserve ecosystem integrity, prevent pollution, and safeguard public health, with the federal government providing leadership and technical support. It emphasizes strict enforcement of standards, shared responsibility among all government levels, and policies that hold polluters accountable while accelerating pollution control through regulation, monitoring, and incentives.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The League of Women Voters supports comprehensive, long-term resource management policies that promote conservation, stewardship, and sustainable use while balancing environmental, public health, social, and economic impacts through coordinated efforts at all levels of government and international cooperation.

CLIMATE CHANGE

The League of Women Voters recognizes climate change as a serious threat and advocates for a science-based, interrelated approach that includes renewable energy, conservation, pollution controls, and resilience-building to protect public health and ensure a stable climate for future generations.

TRANSFER OF FEDERAL PUBLIC LANDS

The League of Women Voters supports federal public lands remaining under federal jurisdiction, managed for multiple-use and sustained-yield to benefit all Americans, with rigorous environmental, cultural, and economic assessments required before any land transfers, and opposes sales to private entities or transfers of subsurface rights.
